VW Golf TDI fuel consumption?

Week to week I am still impressed with the VW Golf TDI we have. I can’t recall how old it is currently, but the more kilometres we put on it, the better fuel consumption gets.

I filled up again today, and I managed to get 850km out of that tank. The car then took 48.5Litres of diesel to bring it back to a full tank.

I certainly could have driven further, as the fuel light had not come on yet. However I wanted to fill up while I had time and at my preferred spot, rather then get near work and pay more per litre.

All in all, the car is doing really well fuel wise. It just had a 30,000km service on the weekend.

I am on my 2nd diesel, both 4WD. I have found that the engines tended to be “tight” the first 20 or 30,000km, and then begins to spin more freely. The fuel economy does get a little better as result, but not more than 10%. (Also you tend to get used to the car and maybe detect it’s sweet spot better.) After that I doubt you will get any better results. For the record, I get about 9.5l/100km on the current Toyota Prado (with 50000km), and was getting about 9l/100km on the Mitsubishi Pajero until I sold it with about 170,000 km on the clock. The Golf’s economy is pretty impressive!

I am very happy with it, I can get about 7 or so days out of each tank, so this more then enough gets me to/from work for a week at a time.

I just filled up today, and this time I ran it a little longer then I usual do. I usually fill up and it will take 48 litres, however this time it took 52.51 litres and I managed to squeeze 894km out of it. I won’t be doing that again, as I hate to let it go so long, but I had something on last night which meant I couldn’t refuel when I needed.

My wife and I are more then happy with it. It might cost more then the standard model, but immediately you feel better about it when you realise you get X kilometres out of a tank and don’t have to stop as often to fill it.

We have already decided the next car will be a diesel again, unfortunately the Honda Accord Euro diesel model never got announced, so looks like it won’t be one of those. At this stage we suspect we might get a VW Jetta TDI, as the sedan would be more practical. The Golf TDI will end up being my wife’s car in about ~12 months time when we sell her 10 year old Lancer Coupe.

It would appear from the last 4 tanks worth of diesel I am averaging about 5.8L/100km (which is what it’s rated at).

I like the fact that you can modify the golf to your hearts content. I put a whole new engine in it and redid the interior. Volkwswagens are great for the ability to just swap parts and basically build your own car. Nissans and Hondas are the same way.
